The Lifestyle Eating and Performance Mediator Release Test (LEAP MRT) is a blood test that identifies the foods and chemicals in your diet that cause sensitivity or intolerance reactions. Chemicals in the diet may be found in processed foods or medications.

Is LEAP the same as a test for food allergies? No, it is not. A food allergy test, like RAST or skin prick, can be done at your allergist’s office. Those tests look for antibodies created by your immune system that trigger an immediate and sometimes severe allergic reaction. A true food allergy that is mounted by the body’s immune system can result in hives, rash, nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, cramping, itchiness in the throat and elsewhere in the body, and sometimes anaphylaxis, a life threatening medical emergency requiring immediate attention.

Are food sensitivities genetic? Sometimes. Food sensitivities can be the same or different for people in the same family. Though two people may come from the same set of parents they are still unique in many ways. The foods that cause symptoms and the symptoms experienced may be different for both of them, but there may also be some of the same too.

Any food – fruit, vegetable, protein, grain, or seed – can cause a food sensitivity. Furthermore, reactions may be dose-dependent. A little of a food may be tolerated, a lot may not. Even foods we think of as healthy foods like garlic or onions or apples could cause a reaction.
