Exercising while you’re going through cancer treatments can be tricky. Some days you may feel so tired you just barely have enough energy to get from one room to another in your own home.

As my wise doctor advised me long ago…. you have to move. If you want a glass of water, you have to go get it. When you don’t feel like moving and all you want to do is sit on the couch, go for a walk. The difference between feeling like you’re 80% yourself and like you’re 50% yourself is enormous! It’s the difference between feeling exhausted and not being able to lift your head. It’s hard to explain to someone who doesn’t know what that feeling is, but if you’ve walked this yellow brick road, I’m sure you get what I’m saying.

You don’t want to completely exhaust yourself with a high intensity activity or even walking, but the only way to preserve the energy you have is to periodically move your body throughout the day.

On my journey, there were days when I couldn’t walk fast and I couldn’t walk far, and when I needed to rest every few steps in between, but I walked. Slowly and steadily, I walked further, faster, and without having to stop, but I was keenly aware how much a long, brisk walk could tire me out.

And that’s exactly what we’re talking about today.

In this episode, my personal trainer, Jason Butler of Body Worx explains why you need to exercise from treatment to recovery, how exercise effects cortisol and inflammation, how much exercise is enough, and how to make sure you don’t overdo it. And how to modify an exercise routine (even yoga) to avoid injury. We talk about finding a knowledgable personal trainer to work with and what to do right now when we’re quarantined at home, even if you don’t have equipment.

This is an episode you won’t want to miss!

Some of the highlights from this episode include:

  • [03:08] Why Jason became a personal trainer and his philosophy on who he chooses to work with.
  • [05:24] The importance of working out during treatment.
  • [10:33] How much you should exercise and when.
  • [12:19] Things to keep in mind before you start a new exercise program.
